On 9 July 2024, X-Press Feeders proudly introduces its first dual-fuel vessel, Eco Maestro. Captain Hristov, a seasoned mariner with a wealth of experience and a passion for advancing maritime technology, is at the helm of this new vessel.

A Journey of Dedication and Growth

Captain Hristov's journey with X-Press Feeders began several years ago, with a commitment to continuous improvement and staying abreast of the latest technologies. "Last year, I received X-Press Feeders’ first of 12 Eco-Vessel, X-Press Capella," he recalls. "Now, being part of a more sustainable shipping future by commanding the first dual-fuel vessel capable of operating on green methanol feels like a natural next step in my career."

His inspiration to pursue a career at sea stemmed from a desire to explore the world. "Like most seamen, I wanted to travel and visit all the countries in the world," he shares. With over two decades of sailing experience, including 14 years as a Master, Captain Hristov has certainly fulfilled this dream, while also taking on significant responsibilities along the way.

Commanding Eco Maestro

Being the captain of Eco Maestro holds special significance for Captain Hristov. "I am proud of the chance given," he says. "I am grateful to Eastaway (the ship-owning arm of X-Press Feeders Group) for letting me be a part of history, commanding X-Press Feeders’ first dual-fuel vessel. It comes with high responsibility and obligations, being a part of this big step towards building a more sustainable world."

Eco Maestro can operate on green methanol, a fuel that significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 65% in terms of its main engine propulsion. This innovation positions Eco Maestro at the forefront of sustainable maritime operations, setting it apart from other vessels Captain Hristov has commanded.

Rigorous Training for a New Era

Captain Hristov and his crew went through extensive preparation and training to operate the new dual-fuel vessel. "The crew had to pass 30 days of training on board the dual-fuel vessel, participate in three methanol bunkering sessions, and complete a two-week course to get the IGF Advance certificate," he explains. "On board, I organize additional training on methanol safety working procedures, bunkering of methanol fuels, and first aid if in contact with methanol."

Maintaining the highest safety standards is paramount for Captain Hristov. Regular training and refresher courses ensure that the crew operates Eco Maestro efficiently and safely, adhering to the company's stringent safety protocols.

Fostering Teamwork and Camaraderie

Creating a positive and cohesive environment on board Eco Maestro is a priority for Captain Hristov. "Most of the crew here come already stimulated to learn and improve themselves," he notes. Regular meetings, coffee times, and karaoke barbecues provide opportunities for open communication and camaraderie. "It's not just about work; it's about enjoying our time together at sea," he emphasizes.

One of the most memorable events for Captain Hristov and his crew was the delivery of Eco Maestro in Jingjiang, China, followed by the delivery and first simultaneous operation methanol bunkering at the Singapore port. These milestones highlight the significance of their collective efforts and dedication.

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Mariners

Captain Hristov's advice for aspiring captains and young professionals in the maritime industry is simple: "You must enjoy being at sea and not accept it as just work." His journey from a passionate seafarer to the captain of our innovative dual-fuel vessel serves as an inspiring example for future generations. "Keep improving, stay updated with the latest technologies, and always strive for excellence," he encourages.

Looking ahead, Captain Hristov remains committed to his personal and career goals. "I like the way I am going through – receiving new builds, improving my knowledge, and keeping up with the latest technologies and maritime standards," he shares. His aspiration to be a part of improving vessel conditions during construction and enhancing the lives of seamen operating these vessels underscores his dedication to advancing the maritime industry.

As we celebrate the launch of Eco Maestro and the first feeder network in Europe powered by green methanol, Captain Hristov's leadership and vision illuminate the path towards a more sustainable and innovative future in shipping. We are proud to have him at the helm, steering us towards new horizons.
